Review of Heir of Ashes by Jina S. Bazzar

(I’m giving as few details as possible, so I will not spoil the book for others.)

I’ve read many supernatural books over the last several years.  In most of them, the heroine falls for the hot guy/vampire/wolf/whatever within weeks of meeting him.  Roxanne Fosch is not that heroine.  Yes, Roxanne does have a hot hybrid in her life, but she also has more concerns such as finding out what kind of supernatural being she is and not ending up in a cage (again).  Roxanne and her hybrid have undeniable chemistry, but she doesn’t become completely wrapped up in him.  There are no words to say how much I appreciate that.

Heir of Ashes is jammed packed with action.  Every time Roxanne finds a way out of one situation, there is another waiting for her.  There are fights, chases and explosions.  You’ll begin to wonder how she survives it all, but that is part of the magic that is Roxanne combined with her nearly unwavering tenacity.

The book is also packed with vivid descriptions.  My favorite is “Far in the horizon where desert met sky there was a shifting of colors, a deep bruise in the sky, as if sunrise hurt the dark before it became.”  It’s almost like poetry.

There are moments that will make you laugh and moments where you deeply sympathize with a character that is both hunted and ostracized because of who she is.  I fully recommend this book.
