I have admired such a wide variety of women throughout my life that I do not always consciously think of all of them, particularly the ones I have admired since I was a little girl. I was reminded of my admiration for Penny Marshall when I read of her death yesterday.
I never remember a time in my life when Penny Marshall was not there on my TV screen. Laverne and Shirley was one of my favorite shows when I was younger (and still is). I admired her spunky, spirited portrayal of Laverne. Laverne was the type of character that inspired me to be braver and stand up for myself and others.
I have always had a desire to make movies, so I deeply appreciate the ground Ms. Marshall broke as a female director. She was the first woman to direct a movie that grossed over $100 million (Big starring Tom Hanks).
I am very saddened by the loss of Ms. Marshall. She was a person that was always part of my existence. Today, I celebrate and appreciate all that she brought to the world and the laughs and inspiration that she brought into my life.
