Book Review: The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski

At the end of 2018, I was in the mood to read a romance between adults that was not supernatural.  I dug deep into my Kindle library to find something I had not read before.  The Edge of Never has been on my to-read list for at least a couple years and was a suggestion based on other books I read.  This book has mostly positive reviews, so I decided to give it a chance.

Camryn, the female lead, is one of those characters where I find it to relate to or have any real empathy for her.  She has experienced heartache (with the loss of her first love), but she just wallows in those feelings.  Her life doesn’t have any direction, so she embarks on a road trip to get away from her problems (not recognizing that most of them are internal).  She encounters a hot guy (Andrew) along the way, so of course (that’s sarcasm), they are attracted to each other and flirt with each other in a passive / aggressive sort of way.  He saves her from a sexual predator, so she attaches herself to him like a barnacle even though she barely knows him.

Andrew has issues of his own and a big secret he is keeping from Camryn.  He keeps saying he is going to stay away from her because of that secret, but if you’ve read any book like this, you know how this goes.

I really wanted to like this book and this couple, but I didn’t.  I also don’t think I can read another book where the characters communicate through song, instead of talking to each other.  I kept reading to find out what Andrew was hiding and it did make me cry a little, even though I didn’t want to.

I really had an issue with the large amount of slut shaming in this book.  If a woman has any kind of sexual desire, she is a slut, according to this book. That is so damn problematic, I couldn’t deal.  I wonder if this book was written in the #metoo era, would the author have the same view?

I’m not going to rate this one, I’m just going to say I would not recommend it to anyone.  If you want to read a book where hot people with issues find love, I would recommend Wait For You by Jennifer L. Armentrout (written under the pen name J. Lynn).
