5 of my favorite Christmas cartoons

Some of my favorite childhood Christmas memories, besides opening presents, were watching the cartoon specials with my family.  I still watch them, even though most of the time only the parakeets are interested.  Since they are tied to such happy moments, re-watching my favorites still soothes my soul even on the crappiest of days (which is why you will sometimes find me watching Christmas cartoons in the middle of summer).  I watch a variety of different shows, but these are the ones I must watch at least once a year (in no particular order).

1. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – as a perpetual misfit, of course this one would end up on my list.  Rudolph was such a cute cartoon to me when I was younger, but I grew to appreciate the underlying story of Rudolph not fitting in because he was different.  Also, I figured out Hermey is not a misfit because he wants to be a dentist.
2. Frosty the Snowman – I always think of Frosty with Rudolph because they used to come on TV the same night.  Frosty is definitely the more lighthearted of the two.  It’s just fun without the life lessons.  And I still do the “tsk, tsk, tsk,” like the rabbit does, especially around Christmas.
3. A Charlie Brown Christmas – Only Charlie Brown would recognize that holidays can sometimes be a bummer.  As a child, I loved anything Snoopy related.  As an adult, my favorite part is when Linus explains the real meaning of Christmas, which is often forgotten.
4. The Year Without A Santa Claus – Santa is sick and is convinced that people no longer care about Christmas, so he “cancels” it.  I really re-watch this for the scene stealing Miser Brothers.  I can’t get enough of their super campy song.
5. Santa Claus is Comin’ Town – The origins of Santa Claus are explained in this one, but I love it for it’s little moments: the bad guy falling down the stairs, the frisky penguin and the catchy songs.
