A Poem – Week Thirty-Six

This poem was written on August 25, 1996. Trigger warning: it is about domestic violence. I have never been in a situation like this, but unfortunately, I have witnessed domestic incidents. If you are in an abusive relationship and are looking for support, please visit https://www.thehotline.org/get-help/ or call 1.800.799.SAFE (7233).

Sun Rise, Sun Set

Opening my eyes to a new day…

Sometimes takes the pain away

Making me feel all right

And then comes the night

Taking the beauty away

Making me pay

Then the sun comes again

And I have my friend

We get along together

But it doesn’t last forever

Because then comes the night

And nothing is right

There is a fight

And I lose my bright future sight

It’s hard to believe both are you

It’s hard to believe you are untrue

One moment you’re nice

Then, the next I think twice

I love and hate you at the same time

I wish only the sunrise was mine.
