An eyelash in the eye is uncomfortable. Anything else is excruciating. I cannot fully explain the story of how I ended up with a pigeon’s egg in my eye, but I’ll try.
It was a warm day, and I was riding my tricycle in the backyard. I was around 4 years old. My mother was outside with me, probably tending to one of her flower beds. I always had a fascination with nature and animals, so when I found an intact pigeon egg on the ground, I was obsessed with it. I carried it around with me and rode my tricycle with the small egg placed in the hole at the top of the handlebar. (One side of the handlebar was missing the plastic tip.) My outside time went from fun to agonizing when somehow the egg broke and ended up in my eye. I don’t know how it happened, but I screamed, and my mother came running. I told her what happened, and she took me inside and flushed out my eye in the bathroom. No matter how much she flushed my eye, it HURT. When my mother believed she removed all the egg from my eye, she had me lay down in my room. I cried myself to sleep and when I woke up, my eye felt better. Luckily, it didn’t get infected or anything.
That wasn’t the last bird’s egg I saw outside, but surely it was the last one that I picked up and played with.
