My #WCW – Glamour Magazine

For the first time in around 20 years, there was not a new issue of Glamour magazine in my mailbox this month.  Glamour ended it’s print edition with the January 2019 issue.  Yes, Glamour still exists as a website, but there is nothing like holding a magazine in your hands.  One of my favorite times of the year used to be when all the giant September issues were released.  I loved pouring through the new fall fashions, in both editorial and ad form.  Now with few exceptions, September issues are no bigger than the Garnet Hill and Boden catalogues that arrive along side them in the mail.  I guess that is one of the signs of the end for most fashion magazines.

I was sixteen the first time I read Glamour.   My mother gave me a large stack of magazines because I was bored and lonely.  I was in heaven and Glamour was my favorite, so my mother ordered a subscription for me.  Glamour was different from the  teen magazines that I read or the other fashion magazines.  It was more than pretty clothes, it was a voice for women.  I learned more than the “Do’s and Don’ts” of fashion reading over the years.  I learned of issues that were important to women that weren’t talked about everywhere and experienced diversity not seen in the other magazines.  Glamour magazine helped me grow into womanhood and still continued to teach me up until it’s very last issue.

I already miss it and will continue to.  I hope that it’s website can serve other women the way that it served me over the years and teach that there is more to a woman’s life than fashion and beauty.

  1. Magazines played such a huge part in the coming-of-age journey for our generation. I remember waiting for Essence and Vibe to come in the mail. It’s amazing how the medium of print allowed us to feel so connected to the people whom we admired. We devoured articles and liner notes. Reading was fundamental in that we did not have the abundance of videos (YouTube) and images (Instagram). If you wanted to learn more about people, you had to read.
